ESC Projects (M) Sdn Bhd was employed as a specialist sub contractor with its scope of works including design and installation of sheet piles and strutting.
The two level basement structure utilised the sheet piles as part of the permanent wall. This reduced the wall thickness and reinforcing requirements, leading to a large cost saving for the Client. In order to enable the sheet pile to be used as a permanent wall the sheet piles had to be driven within plus or minus 50mm vertical tolerance. The varying lengths of sheet piles (9 to 13.5 metres) were driven using a hydraulic vibro hammer mounted on a pileleader. Due to the light to dense sandy silt soil conditions a single row of ESC Projects (M) Sdn Bhds' struts were predominantly used around the perimeter of the site as raking struts off the pile cap foundations. These were reused 5 times around the site as the construction phases required. In some areas of shallower excavation, the piles were able to be cantilevered up to 4.0m. The high strength strutting allowed a working space of up to 10m to be provided between raking struts.
