Paul Y Construction were contracted to provide a complete 3 level basement on a hill slope. On one side of the excavation there was a hill to be excavated 18 metres from the ground level. On the other side it was a mere 8 metres. In addition, within the centre of this excavation there existed a further 8 metre excavation for a sewerage treatment plant. Adjacent to the site was a church that was a protected historical building, a school and a three story private hospital that was founded on timber piles.
Paul Y Construction turned to Earth Support Company (M) Sdn Bhd and Pilecon Geotechnics Sdn Bhd to provide the complete design and build remedy for this problem basement. Earth Support Company (M) Sdn Bhds' scope of work included complete design, sheet piling and strutting. The sheet piles were varying lengths (15 to 18 metres) and were delivered to site in 6 metre sections and welded on site before being driven with a hydraulic vibro hammer mounted on a pileleader to assist in accurate driving. A complex network of universal beam struts was used to support the sheet pile walls and transfer the uneven loads. Large scale crown blocks were constructed to channel the forces evenly through the strutting system and ensure balanced loading.
