Pilecon Geotechnics Sdn Bhd were in need of a system which could provide them with a cost effective and workable solution to supporting an excavation of 13 metres in depth and to only use three sides of the excavation for sheet pile installation and support. Ground conditions consisted of a loose sand layer varying from 5-25 metres, overlaying a solid limestone base.
ESC Projects (M) Sdn Bhd designed and built the retaining structure that enabled Pilecon Geotechnics Sdn Bhd to build a 3 level basement with large open areas that allowed the lift cores of the two towers to proceed unobstructed. ESC Projects (M) Sdn Bhd had factors such as unequal loading on the opposite sides of the site and the limestone base to cater for. This was catered for by driving the sheet piles on three sides of the excavation to refusal and then a combination system of ESC Projects (M) Sdn Bhds' strutting, ground anchor systems and rock bolts were used to provide the necessary support. During the excavation by Pilecon Geotechnics Sdn Bhd, controlled blasting was employed in order to assist in the breaking up of the limestone. ESC Projects (M) Sdn Bhd had to ensure that the strutting and anchor system designed could cater for the blasting and subsequent removal of the limestone. Meticulous design and construction controls were carried out by ESC Projects (M) Sdn Bhd to provide the Main Contractor with the desired end product.
