Research Grouting of Sheet Pile Joints

Method Statement for Bentonite-Cement Grouting of Sheet Pile Joints

page 1 | page 2 | page 3

1.0 SCOPE

This method statement covers the insitu grouting of the interlocking joints along the full length of ESC-BP6-FO-6.0m sheet piles for Projek Tebatan Banjir Sungai Muda (Hilir) Pakej 1 Proposed Tidal Barrage at Ch 10350.

The work shall consist of furnishing materials, equipment and labor and performing all operations connected with constructing a bentonite-cement cutoff wall according to the plans and specifications or as specified by Site Engineer to complete the work properly.

2.0 OBJECTIVE

In order to meet with the specific requirement for the above mentioned project, the basic purpose of the cutoff wall is to serve as a low permeability seepage barrier. While the steel is impervious, leakage through the sheet piling occurs primarily through the interlocking joints. The sealing of interlocking joints shall minimize fluid seepage, especially the migration of contaminated or uncontaminated groundwater.

3.0 PREPARATORY WORK

Consideration and execution of certain works will be essential to the smooth flow and operation of the project. Among these, the following will figure prominently;

3.1 Transportation and Delivery of Machinery

Required machinery and equipment will be transported and unloaded at the assigned location within the construction area. The equipment may be separate items or platform mounted preferably operating from a central position which follows the progress of works. Specific items of equipment are;

Equipment Description
Grout Mixer
A batch mixer with high speed and high shear vortex to ensure each cement particle is fully wetted. Discharging a batch in under 15 seconds, by the rugged, vertically mounted impeller pump assembly housed in the base of the unit.
Water & Grout Pump
A medium to high pressure, mechanical pump (pmax < 200 kPa) of limited flow capacity (< 500 litres/min) and pressure gauge.
Piping
A continuous pipe-work to allow transfer of water and grout from the storage or mixer to the wash and/or grout tube for injection into the bottom of the joint chamber including bypasses to flush-out or clean up the piping at each stage of the clean-out and grouting up of the joint.
