A substantial storm water canal that was running through the middle of a residential area was in a bad state of disrepair. The existing concrete piles had collapsed in areas and the houses that backed onto the drain were at risk of plunging into the drain. A simple yet safe workable solution was requested from ESC Projects (M) Sdn Bhd.
A design and build contract was taken on by ESC Projects (M) Sdn Bhd and had to be expedited due to the deteriorating nature of the existing drain. In order to reduce costs ESC Projects (M) Sdn Bhd designed an eight metre sheet pile using one level of struts.
ESC Projects (M) Sdn Bhd drove an initial set of sheet piles to either side of the drain, and then placed decking platforms on top of the driven sheet piles using the bearing capacity of the sheet piles to allow the crane to straddle the river and drive the sheet piles as it proceeded along the 500 metre length. As the sheet piles were completed behind the existing and/or collapsed concrete piles these concrete piles were then hacked and removed leaving the area free for the construction of a simple I Beam capping beam which was supported by a light I Beam brace at 6 metre intervals.
All material was galvanized to give a long permanent life and provide an aesthetically pleasing end product. Due to the close proximity of the neighbouring houses it was essential that both noise and vibration was kept to within the appropriate levels. This was closely monitored as part of the construction process.
